Research suggests that the most effective psychological therapy for Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). CBT involves teaching people a series of skills to manage anxiety, shift negative and irrational thinking patterns, and confront their fears in manageable steps. In sessions a therapist (often a Clinical Psychologist) will introduce anxiety management techniques and the client is then asked to practice the techniques between visits, as well as other “homework” tasks. In this way the client learns to tackle the anxiety problems themselves.

A large number of research studies have shown that CBT is beneficial for most people with panic attacks or Panic Disorder.

Some people require only 5 or 6 sessions. However the number of sessions required varies depending upon the exact nature of a person’s panic symptoms.

Medications, such as antidepressants, are sometimes prescribed for people with panic attacks, often in addition to CBT. You should consult your GP or specialist if you feel this may be required. However many individuals find psychological therapy alone is all they require to overcome their panic attacks. In other cases your treating health professional may recommend a combination of psychological therapy and medication. One big advantage of including psychological therapy is that the gains made during therapy often continue after therapy, as you have been taught skills to manage your anxiety symptoms by yourself.
